Potassium bicarbonate is effective against many powdery mildew species and has Commodity Substance Approval in the UK for use as a horticultural fungicide in all crops. It is a contact fungicide killing spores and hyphae on plant surfaces within minutes of application. It has multiple modes of action meaning less risk of resistant fungal strains developing. Use 5 - 20 grams per litre applied as a conventional foliar spray to ensure even coverage of the target plant surface. Repeated lower rate applications at 7 - 10 day intervals may be more effective than one single high rate application. Effectiveness can be increased by using an approved adjuvant but consider conditions of approval, harvest interval and potential phytotoxicity.
